With his frail old hands, he picked me up carefully and sat at his desk. Master was getting older and was probably thinking of organizing his inheritance among his seven sons. Our master had locked his last will and testament inside me, and wanted to relook to make changes. What a sad life he had – I thought to myself, and secretly hoped that he’d soon meet his soulmate – the one who’d open his locked heart.Īnd I did not have to wait for long – the day soon arrived. He only cared about one thing – protecting me and my belongings. “There must be someone in the world who would open the locked heart of yours, and melt you down in love.”Įvery day I’d try to share romantic stories with Lucius, but his stern face never budged. But it better stays that way, else, your precious treasures would get in danger.” He spoke. “Is there anything at all in the whole wide world that could ever move you, my good Lucius?” I asked him. He rarely spoke, barely smiled and never moved. Good looking and strong he was, no doubt, but to my romantic taste, he felt rather heartless and insensitive. Lucius was a beautiful lock – he had a golden, shiny look and was engraved with intricate designs all over his smart face. In order to keep me and my treasures protected, he introduced me to my friend Lucius Lock – A large, heavy, metallic lock who was made to put his heavy arm around my shoulder, locking me up, so no one could open me, and meddle with my contents. My master kept his most precious belongings and papers inside me. I am Tristan Treasure-box, a treasure box – made in teak wood. My dear strong friend, who protected me and my belongings from uninvited hands was killed in a thud, and I simply stood there helpless – watching with my eyes shut! I still remember with great despair the fateful day when Lucius’ sad heart was hammered open, putting him to rest forever. And I know how true that statement is, having witnessed the sad fate of my dear friend Lucius – Lucius Lock.

This note-taking app has more in common with Google Docs than an alternative to Google Keep or Evernote. The average user will find the biggest hurdle in adoption is the lack of features. While the project is quite simple to use, there’s not a lot of documentation and the community is small in comparison to other projects. When testing on a mobile web browser, I was disconnected several times hinting that this might not be a good offering for the on-the-go user. The web-based-only interface means that the average user will need to rely on someone else to host a server entrusting the server owner to keep their data safe and backed up. We shouldn’t worry about who might read them. Your private key is NOT synchronized to any service. The notes we jot down are our private thoughts that deserve to be encrypted in a secure, digital notebook. Data is still encrypted before it is sent to any service, so the provider of the service should not have access to the contents of your files. This can be done through Dropbox, though other services will be added in the future. Optionally, multiple device synchronization can be handled through Encryptic. If you cannot trust the device you are writing on, you should not be writing on it. This will remove all notes and the private key from the IndexedDB.Įncryptic (or pretty much anything else for that matter) cannot protect you from a compromised browser or computer. In the options menu there is a section that allows you to wipe the current users. However, your passphrase is never stored anywhere (this also means that there's no way to recover it if you forget it). Your private key is stored in your browser, so that means anyone with access to your browser or app data can view it. Save this key because without it recovering your notes will be impossible. This key is stored in your IndexedDB as well, though there is no convenient means of extracting it. After this is generated you will be presented with a download for it. Upon registering a user in Encryptic, the software will generate you a 2048 bit pgp key with the passphrase set to whatever you typed in during user creation. Encryption is done by the openpgpjs library. It was a mainstay through the AIDS crisis: When everyone was in the same spot, race seemed to matter less, and white gay men started to come to Catch One, making for the kind of integrated crowd that would have never been seen in a disco club before. In its prime, Catch One’s attendance swelled to 1,300 a night and included celebrities like Madonna, Sharon Stone, and Janet Jackson.Īs the climate of the world shifted, Catch One changed too, but over the staggering 42 years it was open, it always remained a safe and inclusive place for the black LGBT community. Unlike her first club, Catch One’s intention was gay from the start. They got their aswer in 1973, when Thais-Williams opened Catch One. Even women were often turned away at the doors, leaving LGBT people of color still in search of a haven where they could safely be themselves. There were other gay discos in Los Angeles, like the famous Studio One, but even though gay was OK in those spaces, black still was not. It was clear, though, that queer people of color needed a specific haven of their own. In the words of Thais-Williams: “It was kind of a miracle, really.” The boundaries of age, gender, color, and sexuality would eventually disappear. But as time went on, the straight white people started to stick around later and later, until they ended up partying with the gays. Three very distinct groups came to her club at different times: White people would come during the day, blue-collar blacks in the evening, then late at night, LGBTs of color. When The Diner’s Club went on sale, she was able to do just that, turning the old spot into everything she wanted it to be and had never been - a mixed club. For years, every time Thais-Williams looked across the street she would think, “One of these days, I’ll own that place, and everybody will be able to come.” Black folk would often come to her store, complaining they’d been turned away from the club by white people who didn’t want black people drinking with them. Years before, Thais-Williams worked across the street from a place called The Diner’s Club. “I thought perhaps a little club,” she said, “where I could be involved with the customers.” But a liquor store felt too impersonal for Thais-Williams. “People are going to drink, no matter what,” her brother, who owned a couple of liquor stores, told her. She ended up owning a dress shop with her sister, but when the recession hit in the '70s, she knew she needed a business that would stay viable even when people were spending less. It took 14 years to get her degree, but Thais-Williams never faltered because she was convinced graduating was the only way she’d become a business owner. That desire led Thais-Williams to migrate to Los Angeles, where she juggled odd jobs while taking classes at the University of California, Los Angeles. She had no doubt she would be an entrepreneur herself when she got older. She’d spend her shifts imagining all the ways she would run her own business. The accomplishment is extraordinary, considering that Thais-Williams grew up in a time when work opportunities were rare for black people, and those available mostly left black people banished behind the scenes, kept out of sight as they worked in the backs of stores.īut Thais-Williams had an uncle who owned a grocery store in San Diego, where she worked every Sunday from ages 9 to 16. Thais-Williams ended up founding and running the first black gay disco in Los Angeles - the historic and legendary Catch One. Her response to the absence of black LGBT spaces? Fixing the problem herself. “Black women are on the bottom of the totem pole for everything,” she says now, making the statement as a fundamental fact that she’s come to reckon with, but which she also refuses to let define her life’s trajectory. Now 78 years old, Thais-Williams lived through a version of Los Angeles where gay culture wasn’t allowed to exist outside of the closet and black people weren’t allowed in white-operated underground gay spaces. That is the world Jewel Thais-Williams came up in. The Lake Tanganyika wild cichlids fish species come from the second deepest lake in the world, Lake Tanganyika. Now that we know a little bit more about African cichlids let’s look at the different classifications of these fish. What Are the Classifications of African Cichlids? However, with captive breeding efforts in the 1990s and 2000s, many species that had been dwindling were revived. Unfortunately, this resulted in wild populations of certain kinds falling. Since then, the fast adaptive radiation of African cichlids continued to grow in the 1980s and 1990s as new species were revealed. This cichlid radiation remained dominant for six years until Tanganyika and Victoria species became available in the mid-1970s. In 1965, the Lake Malawi species was the first of its genus to be introduced into fishkeeping. In 1935, a new genus of Mbunas was identified in Lake Malawi, and its adjacent regions are known as Melanochromis. One year later, David Livingstone tracked down the Lake Malawi population. In 1858, Richard Burton and John Speke discovered Lake Tanganyika’s first African Cichlid population. You also want to consider finish if you’re displaying it behind glass. It can affect how visible the image is, especially if there’s glare where you’re displaying it. The surface finish of the paper has a significant impact on the final print. This certification addresses sustainability factors in the production, packaging, and transportation of goods. Some papers carry certification from the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). If you want to preserve our environment, one of your criteria might be increased sustainability. You will also need to know about pigment inks and how they react with the surface of the paper.ĭo you need archive-quality art paper that will be resistant to UV light? Do you want a textured matte finish, like canvas, or do you need sticky-backed photo paper? If you want fine art photography prints, then you will need a high-quality printer to print on high-quality photo paper. It seems obvious, but the quality of your printer will have a big impact on the quality of your prints. Your final photo prints will result from a number of decisions, even once you have taken the photo and edited it. You’ll also want a better finish you get from high-quality photo paper. Check the manual to establish the maximum weight that will work in your printer.Ī relatively cheap photo paper will let you print out photos for making cards or putting them in a display.īut for higher-quality display purposes, you’ll want paper with a heavier weight. It’s worth checking, as many printers will have a rear slot for envelopes or heavyweight paper. If your printer doesn’t have a direct paper path, you will be limited in the weight of paper you can use. Most of the answers to these questions will be determined by a few factors: Which paper is better- glossy or matte? What weight is best? When choosing the best photo paper for inkjet printers, we have to make a few choices. () How to Decide What Paper is Best for You The good news is that a normal photo, the kind you might send your granny for the holidays, works well in both imperial (6″ x 4”) and metric (15 cm x 10 cm).Įven better news, this is the same ratio of a full-frame or APS-C photo, which is 2:3. US letter size is standard for regular office printing, whereas others would use A4. Choosing the Correct Paper SizeĪnd to add to the fun, the sizes are often different. In general, fine art papers will be thicker, and everyday papers will come in a variety of weights. This same paper is listed as 54 lbs in the US. The everyday printer paper we use for printing our essays and letters to the bank manager is usually 80 gsm. The heavier the listed weight, the thicker the paper is. And weight, of course, measures thickness. With US paper, you might also find the type of paper included, listed as “80 lb cover paper” or “80 lb text paper.” These are two different weights of paper-216 gsm and 118 gsm, respectively. And everywhere else in the world, it’s listed as grams per square meter-g/m2 or, more commonly, “gsm.” © Trevor Marshall In the US, paper weight is expressed in pounds (lbs). One of these is how we define paper types. We live in a connected world, but there are still some significant areas of divergence. It does seem to have a bit of a more cynical spin than other posts. I can understand that some people might be miffed by this last post. It’s like a few people I’ve met saying they want to move to Costa Rica and live in a “Eco Commune” (read: live in a compound with other foreigners and play “the Mosquito Coast” with a happy ending). I actually agree with this article as it pertains to a small swath of the “white” (read: middle/upper-class green romantics) population. My bro pretty much agreed with me that it’s just eco-organic-labour-tourism. Well, seeing that my brother just spent last summer “woofing” (the european term for hip people working for free in a organic farms) in France. Note: if you encounter a white person who is actually good at manual labor they are either some kind of performance artist, writing a book, or the host of a show on HGTV. So, if you are currently working in a job that requires intensive amounts of work, you should consider using that work space to create what is essentially an adult daycare for white people who would like to spend an afternoon learning how to use a loom or pretending to be a construction worker. It is well established that all white people enjoy doing manual labor under watered down and expensive conditions. But that is only looking at the small picture. Of course the easiest way to turn a profit with this information would be to start your own fruit picking farm. It’s no surprise white people like it, because much like a liberal arts degree it feels like you’ve done real work when you really haven’t. In other words, berry picking is the agricultural equivalent to a private liberal arts college. When white people harvests a crop it’s known as “berry picking” or “pick your own fruit.” Under these conditions, white people are expected to work leisurely with no real expectations and then they pay for the privilege to do so. Many of you might be familiar with the process of harvesting a crop, some of its more intense variations are often referred to as “migrant labor” and “slavery.” Under these conditions, laborers are expected to work extremely hard in order to live up to large expectations about their fruit picking output. Some white people have to get their fix by picking their own fruit. However, not all white people have the ability, or the trust funds, to quit their job and follow their food-based passions. In recent years, the most advanced white people have quit their jobs, moved to the country and opened artisanal dairies and small scale radicchio farms. This most positive viewpoint comes from the fact that white people have mostly enjoyed supervisory roles in agricultural production over the years.īut as more and more white people moved into cities, they lost their connection to working the land. So when white people think about growing their own food they are reminded of pastoral images of farming, working the land, and growing whole natural foods for their family. Vintage clothing, history degrees, and nostalgia are just three examples of how white people show their love for by-gone eras. It is well established that white people like the past. |
