Standard Notes prides itself as a privacy- and security-centric note app. Standard Notes – Secure Notes With Lots Of Featuresīest Apps To Take Notes On Android with Source Code (Free Download) Pros It has some unique capabilities that might suffice for the casual note-taker but will leave the more-serious users wanting better functionality. This note-taking app has more in common with Google Docs than an alternative to Google Keep or Evernote. The average user will find the biggest hurdle in adoption is the lack of features. While the project is quite simple to use, there’s not a lot of documentation and the community is small in comparison to other projects. When testing on a mobile web browser, I was disconnected several times hinting that this might not be a good offering for the on-the-go user. The web-based-only interface means that the average user will need to rely on someone else to host a server entrusting the server owner to keep their data safe and backed up. ConsĮtherpad’s code has gone through a few rewrites, and as with many open-source projects, it contains technical debt (old, bad, or unused code). This gives you maximum control over data security. The project maintains a list of hosted instances with some explanations about the organization and caveats to each.Įtherpad is federated which means you can download and install it on your web server. The newest user interface provides a clean and minimalist experience and the time-to-first-note is unbeatable when using a hosted instance. What are the best secure note-taking apps? I’ve used Google Keep and my iPhone Notes app, but I needed to make a change. Like most users, I made the mistake of using whatever pre-installed app was on my smartphone. We shouldn’t worry about who might read them. Your private key is NOT synchronized to any service. The notes we jot down are our private thoughts that deserve to be encrypted in a secure, digital notebook. Data is still encrypted before it is sent to any service, so the provider of the service should not have access to the contents of your files. This can be done through Dropbox, though other services will be added in the future. Optionally, multiple device synchronization can be handled through Encryptic. If you cannot trust the device you are writing on, you should not be writing on it. This will remove all notes and the private key from the IndexedDB.Įncryptic (or pretty much anything else for that matter) cannot protect you from a compromised browser or computer. In the options menu there is a section that allows you to wipe the current users. However, your passphrase is never stored anywhere (this also means that there's no way to recover it if you forget it). Your private key is stored in your browser, so that means anyone with access to your browser or app data can view it. Save this key because without it recovering your notes will be impossible. This key is stored in your IndexedDB as well, though there is no convenient means of extracting it. After this is generated you will be presented with a download for it. Upon registering a user in Encryptic, the software will generate you a 2048 bit pgp key with the passphrase set to whatever you typed in during user creation. Encryption is done by the openpgpjs library.
